Is Mojácar Expensive?

Depending on where you come from, Mojácar is generally considered reasonably priced in terms of accommodation, house prices, food and drink. With that said, it is one of the most expensive areas in Almería due to it being one of the most popular tourist hot spots in the region.

As of 2023, apartments can range from €120,000 euros all the way up to €600,000+ villas and an average main meal at a beach front restaurant will set you back approx €13-€20, soft drinks are around €2.50 and a pint of beer is typically around €3.50-€4 at the moment (prices have been shooting up since the Covid days mind).

Average Food & Drink Prices

When it comes to food and drink, prices can vary significantly depending on where you dine, but with such a wide range of bars and restaurants in Mojácar to choose from, there’s something for everyones budget.

If you eat in the lesser tourist-y bars slightly back from the sea front, you can expect to save 20% on your overall bill. If you’d like an upmarket beach front experience at somewhere like Maui Beach Club or Vista Del Mar, you can expect to be hitting the upper limits of these averages.

Here’s some prices you can expect to pay (per person) along most of Mojácar Playa:

Hotel Prices in Mojácar

This is where it gets extremely difficult as hotel prices dramatically fluctuate with the busy tourist season and most hotels close during the winter. I’ll split this into 3 sections, pre-summer, peak-summer (British school holidays), and post-summer.

These prices are based on booking.com and are only a guide, please check somewhere like booking.com for your dates and requirements for an accurate quote.

Pre-Summer (May – June)

Hotel prices during this period can be reasonable, you can expect to pay €800-€1000 for a 2-adult 7 night stay in a mid-range hotel with breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Peak-Summer (July-Aug)

You can expect to pay around €1500 for a 7 day self-catering holiday for 2 adults in the peak of summer, and between €2000-€2500 if you’d like a nicer room and be all-inclusive.

Post Summer (Sep-Oct)

There are good deals to be had once the British summer holidays end, between September and October (where it’s still very warm), you’ll probably be looking at between €500-€700 for a 7 night stay for 2 adults with breakfast included.

Other Average Costs:

Accommodation: The cost of accommodation in Mojácar varies depending on factors such as location, property type, and amenities. Coastal properties and apartments with breathtaking sea views might come at a premium, while homes further inland tend to be more budget-friendly. Overall, the rental and real estate prices in Mojácar are relatively affordable compared to major cities in Spain.

Expats and locals often find utility bills to be manageable and in line with other regions of Spain. An average weekly shop for a family of 2 you can expect to cost €120, but if you start buying British import products from shops like Iceland you can expect to almost double it.

Here are some local activities and roughly what to expect:

The only fuente in Mojácar is in Mojácar pueblo. It’s large and popular with locals, and has become somewhat of a tourist attraction for people visiting to pueblo. The local government has plans to spend a significant amount of money to improve it soon.

One important consideration to keep in mind is the environmental impact of bottled water. Plastic bottles contribute significantly to pollution and waste, so it’s important to use them responsibly.

Not only that, Mojácar Playa is 4 miles long and each end offers a very different experience.

Mojácar Pueblo: For History and Culture Lovers

Perched atop a hill, Mojácar Pueblo is a picturesque whitewashed town that takes you back in time. The labyrinth of narrow streets, quaint squares, and traditional homes brimming with colorful flowers offer an authentic Andalusian experience.

Staying in the Pueblo is difficult are there’s very few hotels and rentals available, but if you can itallows you easy access to historic sites such as the Santa María Church, the Moorish fountain, and the Plaza Nueva viewpoint. Additionally, the Pueblo’s hilltop location provides spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Mediterranean Sea.

Personally, if only visiting, I would recommend staying on Mojácar Playa and doing a day trip to the Pueblo. Mojácar Playa: For Beach & Leisure Enthusiasts

Mojácar Playa, extending 4 miles along the coastline, is a modern resort area known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife. Accommodations here range from 4-star adult only luxury resorts to family-friendly package hotels and self-catering apartments.

Staying in Mojácar Playa gives you direct access to the town’s superb beaches, numerous bars & restaurants, beach bars (chiringuitos), water sports facilities and plenty of other things to do. You can spend your days soaking up the sun, indulging in water activities or simply strolling along the seafront promenade.

As locals, we divide Mojácar Playa into a north beach and a south beach. Around the Mandala Beach bar area is where I personally like to divide the beach from. South of this area, beach bars & restaurants take over, with endless venues for you to choose from. Everything is in walking distance and it’s the social hub of Mojácar.

North of this area is much more relaxed, with more commercial area such as the Parque Commercial and a Mercadona supermarket. Hotels and rentals this end of the beach are generally much cheaper as they are further away from the busy tourist areas.

In fact, most days are bright and sunny in the heart of winter, making it an ideal escape for those seeking a milder winter. Although it does get very cold the minute the sun goes down!

November is typically quite warm, you can wear shorts through the day but need a jacket for the evening, December is similar. January and February are the coldest months by far, you’ll need long trousers and a jacket on your the majority of the time.

Is Mojácar Busy In Winter? Welcome To The Peaceful Pace

With the departure of the summer crowd, Mojácar embraces a MUCH slower pace in winter. The town breathes a sigh of relief as the busy streets quiet down, and the locals reclaim their space (and parking)

This tranquility is one of my favourite aspects of winter in Mojácar, providing an opportunity to enjoy the town’s beauty in peace.

Most shops, restaurants, and attractions remain open, though operating hours may be slightly reduced. Yet, the overall atmosphere is far from dormant. In fact, the off-season offers a unique opportunity to engage with local life, traditions, and customs without the summer crowds.

Winter Activities in Mojácar

Believe it or not, Mojacar doesn’t hibernate in winter. There are plenty of things to do, especially if you appreciate nature and history. A few of the top of my head are visit the Pulpí Geode, take a painting class with The Pallet Studio, or hire a car for the day and explore the Sierra Cabrera mountains.

Outdoor Adventures

The mild winter climate is perfect for exploring the natural beauty around Mojácar. The Sierra Cabrera mountains, for example, offer a network of hiking and biking trails that remain accessible throughout the winter.

But what about rent? From my experience, a two-bedroom apartment near the beach will set you back around €500 a month. However, brace yourself for slight hikes during our tourist season if you’re not in a long-term let agreement.

But considering the breathtaking views and the warm Mediterranean breezes, I’d say it’s worth every cent.

Luckily, the cool sea breeze provides a much-needed respite and most homes are fitted with air-conditioning.

The winters are gentle compared to the UK, with temperatures rarely dropping below 10°C. This makes it an excellent choice for those looking to escape colder climates.

With that said, once you’ve lived here for 2 years, you’ll suddenly realise how fast you’ve acclimatised and find yourself in jeans and a cost even when the weather is 15 degrees.

As a Mojacar local I can assure you that moving here is about embracing a whole new way of life. We enjoy a slower pace, one that allows us to savor our morning café con leche without rushing, and to appreciate the beauty in everyday life.
