If you’re planning a trip to Mojácar and are curious about what the weather’s like in our small Spanish town, you’re in for a treat. Let’s dive into what you can expect month by month.

Trust me, it’s a place where every season brings its own vibe!

Spring in Mojácar

Spring in Mojácar is a delightful time. From March to May, the town slowly awakens from its winter hibernation.

Temperatures range from a comfortable 20°C (59°F) in March to a pleasant 30°C (68°F) by May. This season is perfect for exploring the town’s historical sites without the summer crowds. It’s also a great time for outdoor activities like hiking or golfing, as the weather is warm but not too hot.

Plus, the occasional rain showers in April bring out the fresh smell of rain, making walks particularly enjoyable.

Summer in Mojácar

Summer, spanning June to August, is when Mojácar truly comes alive. It’s the classic beach season, with average temperatures ranging from a warm 24°C (75°F) in June to a hot 40°C in August.

The sun shines bright, and the beaches become the main attraction. It’s the perfect time for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying water sports. However, it’s important to protect yourself from the sun, as the heat can be quite intense, especially in July and August.

The evenings are still very warm, ideal for enjoying Mojácar’s vibrant nightlife or a peaceful stroll along the beach.

Autumn in Mojácar

Autumn, from September to November, is a time of transition and mild beauty in Mojácar. The temperatures start to cool, ranging from 25°C (77°F) in September to around 16°C (61°F) in November. This season is perfect for those who prefer a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere.

The sea remains warm enough for swimming in September, and the cooler temperatures in October and November are ideal for exploring the surrounding natural landscapes.

The town’s pace slows down, giving you a more authentic experience of local life. Autumn’s mild weather also makes it a great time for golfing and other outdoor sports.

Winter in Mojácar

Winter, from December to February, is the quietest season in Mojácar, but it has its own charm. Temperatures are mild, averaging around 12°C (54°F) to 13°C (55°F). It’s a peaceful time in the town, perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of busier seasons.

The cooler weather is ideal for leisurely exploring the town’s cultural and historical landmarks without the heat or crowds.

While it’s too cool for traditional beach activities, the winter months offer a unique opportunity to experience Mojácar’s local life and other things to do in the area, especially during the festive Christmas season.

Each season in Mojácar brings its own unique experiences and opportunities, making it a great year-round destination. Whether you’re looking for lively beach days in the summer or quiet cultural exploration in the winter, Mojácar has something special to offer.

Mojácar Weather in October

<img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3150" src="https://mojacarlife.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/Mojacar-Weather-in-October.jpg" alt="Beachfront view of Mojácar with a wide expanse of sandy beach visible, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea.
In October, things cool down to around 20°C (68°F). It’s a lovely time as the high season winds down and the winter season in Mojácar starts. You’ll get a mix of warm days and cooler evenings, perfect for exploring both the beaches and the mountains.

Mojácar Weather in November

November sees further cooling, with averages around 16°C (61°F). It’s quieter around town, and you’ll get a more authentic feel of local life. The weather is still nice enough for outdoor activities during the day, just with fewer tourists around.

Mojácar, nestled along the picturesque coastline of Spain, has long captivated the hearts of travellers with its stunning beaches, historic charm, and vibrant culture.

As you consider making this sun-soaked paradise your home or holiday destination, the question that lingers for many is whether Mojácar is an affordable place to visit, or even live.

Having lived in the area myself for over 20 years, I want to delve into the cost of living in Mojácar and give you some insight into the average prices of food, drink, paella and the famed “menu del dia,” a culinary delight cherished by locals and visitors alike.

Is Mojácar Expensive?

Depending on where you come from, Mojácar is generally considered reasonably priced in terms of accommodation, house prices, food and drink. With that said, it is one of the most expensive areas in Almería due to it being one of the most popular tourist hot spots in the region.

As of 2023, apartments can range from €120,000 euros all the way up to €600,000+ villas and an average main meal at a beach front restaurant will set you back approx €13-€20, soft drinks are around €2.50 and a pint of beer is typically around €3.50-€4 at the moment (prices have been shooting up since the Covid days mind).

Average Food & Drink Prices

When it comes to food and drink, prices can vary significantly depending on where you dine, but with such a wide range of bars and restaurants in Mojácar to choose from, there’s something for everyones budget.

If you eat in the lesser tourist-y bars slightly back from the sea front, you can expect to save 20% on your overall bill. If you’d like an upmarket beach front experience at somewhere like Maui Beach Club or Vista Del Mar, you can expect to be hitting the upper limits of these averages.

Hotel Prices in Mojácar

This is where it gets extremely difficult as hotel prices dramatically fluctuate with the busy tourist season and most hotels close during the winter. I’ll split this into 3 sections, pre-summer, peak-summer (British school holidays), and post-summer.

These prices are based on booking.com and are only a guide, please check somewhere like booking.com for your dates and requirements for an accurate quote.

Pre-Summer (May – June)

Hotel prices during this period can be reasonable, you can expect to pay €800-€1000 for a 2-adult 7 night stay in a mid-range hotel with breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Peak-Summer (July-Aug)

You can expect to pay around €1500 for a 7 day self-catering holiday for 2 adults in the peak of summer, and between €2000-€2500 if you’d like a nicer room and be all-inclusive.

Post Summer (Sep-Oct)

There are good deals to be had once the British summer holidays end, between September and October (where it’s still very warm), you’ll probably be looking at between €500-€700 for a 7 night stay for 2 adults with breakfast included.

Other Average Costs:

Accommodation: The cost of accommodation in Mojácar varies depending on factors such as location, property type, and amenities.
Utilities: Electricity, water, and internet services are reasonably priced in Mojácar, contributing to a comfortable standard of living. If you prefer exploring on your own, renting or purchasing a bicycle can be a cost-effective and eco-friendly option. A bus ticket is around €1.50-€3, and you can expect a 15 minute metered taxi journey to cost you approx €13-€15.

Shopping: Food shopping in Mojácar can be economical, especially if you opt for local produce and seasonal items.

As an expat who has called Mojácar home for several years, one of the questions I’m often asked by friends and family visiting is “Can you drink tap water in Mojácar?”

It’s a valid concern for anyone travelling to a new place, and in this post, we’ll discuss everything you need to know about water quality in Mojácar.

The Short Answer

In general, tap water in Mojácar, like in most parts of Spain, is safe to drink. It meets the safety standards set by the European Union for drinkable water. However, despite its safety, locals and visitors often choose to drink bottled water due to taste preferences.

A Question of Taste

Although the tap water in Mojácar is safe to consume, it’s important to note that the taste can vary significantly from what you might be used to back in the UK. The difference in taste is mainly due to the high mineral content in the water.

Some people find the taste off-putting, while others don’t mind it.

Bottled Water: The Preferred Choice

Despite the safety of tap water, you’ll find that bottled water is commonly consumed in Mojácar, both by locals and tourists.

The main reason for this is the superior taste of bottled water, as it lacks the strong mineral flavour that can be found in tap water. Additionally, bottled water is inexpensive and widely available in Mojácar, making it a convenient choice.

Each town also has it’s own ‘fuente’ or fountain, here both residents and locals can take their water bottles to fill up with better tasting water than you get from the tap.

Where Is The Fuente in Mojácar?

The only fuente in Mojácar is in Mojácar pueblo. It’s large and popular with locals, and has become somewhat of a tourist attraction for people visiting to pueblo. The local government has plans to spend a significant amount of money to improve it soon.

Environmental Considerations

One important consideration to keep in mind is the environmental impact of bottled water. Plastic bottles contribute significantly to pollution and waste, so it’s important to use them responsibly.

If you do opt for bottled water, please consider recycling the bottles at one of Mojácar’s many recycling bins, or, even better, use a refillable bottle.

Conclusion

So, can you drink tap water in Mojácar? Yes, you can, but whether you choose to do so is largely a matter of personal preference.

Bottled water is widely available and inexpensive, offering a taste that most people prefer. However, if you don’t mind the taste of the tap water, it’s perfectly safe to drink.

The post Can You Drink Tap Water in Mojácar? first appeared on Mojácar Life News.

Planning a visit to Mojácar and wondering where to stay? As a local resident, I’m here to help you through the best areas to stay depending on what you want from your holiday.

Mojácar: A Tale of Two Destinations

Mojácar is essentially divided into two distinct sections – Mojácar Pueblo (Old Town) and Mojácar Playa (Beach). Both areas offer unique experiences, and your choice largely depends on the type of holiday you’re looking for.

Not only that, Mojácar Playa is 4 miles long and each end offers a very different experience.

Mojácar Pueblo: For History and Culture Lovers

Perched atop a hill, Mojácar Pueblo is a picturesque whitewashed town that takes you back in time. The labyrinth of narrow streets, quaint squares, and traditional homes brimming with colorful flowers offer an authentic Andalusian experience.

Staying in the Pueblo is difficult are there’s very few hotels and rentals available, but if you can itallows you easy access to historic sites such as the Santa María Church, the Moorish fountain, and the Plaza Nueva viewpoint. Additionally, the Pueblo’s hilltop location provides spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Mediterranean Sea.

For more detailed information on the rich history and cultural heritage of Mojácar Pueblo, visit the official tourism page of Mojácar.

Personally, if only visiting, I would recommend staying on Mojácar Playa and doing a day trip to the Pueblo. If you haven’t rented a car for your stay, there are plenty of Taxi’s that will cost less than €10 or you can hop on a very regular and reliable bus for around €1.20. Click here for the latest Mojacar bus timetable.

Mojácar Playa: For Beach & Leisure Enthusiasts

Mojácar Playa, extending 4 miles along the coastline, is a modern resort area known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife. Accommodations here range from 4-star adult only luxury resorts to family-friendly package hotels and self-catering apartments.

Staying in Mojácar Playa gives you direct access to the town’s superb beaches, numerous bars & restaurants, beach bars (chiringuitos), water sports facilities and plenty of other things to do. You can spend your days soaking up the sun, indulging in water activities or simply strolling along the seafront promenade.

As locals, we divide Mojácar Playa into a north beach and a south beach. Around the Mandala Beach bar area is where I personally like to divide the beach from. South of this area, beach bars & restaurants take over, with endless venues for you to choose from. Everything is in walking distance and it’s the social hub of Mojácar.

North of this area is much more relaxed, with more commercial area such as the Parque Commercial and a Mercadona supermarket. Hotels and rentals this end of the beach are generally much cheaper as they are further away from the busy tourist areas.

To help plan your beach days, visit Trip Advisor, which provides comprehensive guides on the beaches of Mojácar.

Proximity to Activities and Attractions

Regardless of where you choose to stay, both areas are just a short drive or bus ride away from each other. This means you can easily enjoy the best of both worlds.

Additionally, Mojácar’s location in Almería province makes it a great base for exploring the wider region. Discover our top-rated places to explore in and around Mojácar here.

Conclusion

Choosing the best area to stay in Mojácar depends on your preferences. If you’re drawn to historic charm, panoramic views, and tranquility, Mojácar Pueblo is a perfect choice. On the other hand, if you’re a beach lover, enjoy vibrant nightlife, and prefer a more resort-style holiday, then Mojácar Playa is the place to be.

Either way, the diverse range of activities and attractions in Mojácar will keep you entertained. Check out our guide on Things to Do in Mojácar to plan your visit.

Remember, Mojácar isn’t just a destination, it’s an experience that stays with you long after you’ve returned home.

The post Discovering the Best Area to Stay in Mojácar: A Local’s Guide first appeared on Mojácar Life News.

As a local of Mojácar, I’m often asked, “Is Mojácar worth visiting?” My response is always an enthusiastic “yes!”

So, let me take you on a more detailed journey of what makes our Mediterranean town a hidden gem.

The Unbeatable Climate

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3057" src="https://mojacarlife.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/The-Climate-in-Mojacar-Spain.jpg" alt="The sunlit shore of Mojácar, Spain, a serene beach stretches out, bordered by a palm-tree-lined promenade.
Mojácar’s climate is characterised by its Mediterranean charm. With over 200 hours of sunshine every month, and average lows of just 18 degrees in the coldest months, it’s no wonder Mojácar is so popular all year round.

As someone who calls Mojacar home for nearly 20 years, I’ve often found myself in the diverse company of locals and expats alike.

One particular community that stands out due to their significant presence is the British community. So, how many Brits live in Mojacar?

The British Presence in Mojacar

While exact numbers vary, it’s estimated that roughly a third of Mojacar’s population is British, that means there are around 2,000 Brits living here, according to recent census data. This blend of cultures, I believe, adds an intriguing layer to Mojacar’s character.

The Appeal of Mojacar for Brits

Why have so many Brits chosen Mojacar as their home you might wonder? Our sunny town offers more than just an excellent climate and stunning beaches. The lower cost of living compared to the UK, the relaxed lifestyle, and the friendly community make Mojacar an attractive choice.

Moreover, Mojacar offers a balance of traditional Spanish culture and familiar British comforts, which makes the transition easier for many Brits.

Connecting with the British Community

With such a size-able British community, there are many local bars & restaurants, shop and social groups cater to the British population. British businesses around town help Brits feel at home while providing opportunities to mingle with locals and other expats.

Conclusion

With a strong British presence, Mojacar truly embodies a blend of cultures. It’s fascinating to see how locals and expats live side by side, enriching the town with their distinct flavours. For Brits considering a move or locals looking to connect with the British community, Mojacar indeed offers a welcoming embrace.

The post How Many Brits Live in Mojácar?

As a resident of Mojácar, I often find myself in awe of how our beautiful coastal town transforms with the seasons.

While summer months bring bustling tourists and warm beach days, winter reveals another facet of Mojácar. Allow me to guide you through the off-season magic that Mojácar offers.

Embracing the Mild Mojácar Winter

First, let’s talk about the weather. Unlike many European destinations that experience harsh winters, Mojácar enjoys a Mediterranean climate. This means mild winters with average temperatures hovering around 10°C.

In fact, most days are bright and sunny in the heart of winter, making it an ideal escape for those seeking a milder winter. Although it does get very cold the minute the sun goes down!

November is typically quite warm, you can wear shorts through the day but need a jacket for the evening, December is similar. January and February are the coldest months by far, you’ll need long trousers and a jacket on your the majority of the time.

For a detailed look at our winter climate, check out Weather Spark.

Is Mojácar Busy In Winter? Welcome To The Peaceful Pace

With the departure of the summer crowd, Mojácar embraces a MUCH slower pace in winter. The town breathes a sigh of relief as the busy streets quiet down, and the locals reclaim their space (and parking)

This tranquility is one of my favourite aspects of winter in Mojácar, providing an opportunity to enjoy the town’s beauty in peace.

Most shops, restaurants, and attractions remain open, though operating hours may be slightly reduced. Yet, the overall atmosphere is far from dormant. In fact, the off-season offers a unique opportunity to engage with local life, traditions, and customs without the summer crowds.

Winter Activities in Mojácar

Believe it or not, Mojacar doesn’t hibernate in winter. There are plenty of things to do, especially if you appreciate nature and history. A few of the top of my head are visit the Pulpí Geode, take a painting class with The Pallet Studio, or hire a car for the day and explore the Sierra Cabrera mountains.

Outdoor Adventures

The mild winter climate is perfect for exploring the natural beauty around Mojácar. The Sierra Cabrera mountains, for example, offer a network of hiking and biking trails that remain accessible throughout the winter.

The smaller crowds mean you can take your time, stop for a picnic, and truly enjoy the stunning views.

Historical Explorations

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3140" src="https://mojacarlife.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Castillo-de-Mojacar.jpg" alt="A rustic stone tower perched on a rugged hill at Macenas, with a staircase leading up to the entrance.
Winter is also an excellent time for delving into Mojacar’s rich history. The town’s historic sites, such as the Santa María Church and the Castillo de Mojacar, are less crowded, giving you the chance to absorb the town’s history at your own pace.

Winter Festivities

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3141" src="https://mojacarlife.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Mojacar-Christmas-Lights.jpg" alt="Twilight view of the Mojácar plaza adorned with Ferrero Rocher Christmas decorations, featuring a large, illuminated Christmas bauble and cone-shaped tree made of lights.
Mojacar does not shy away from celebrating winter in style. In December, the town lights up for Christmas, with decorations adorning the streets and squares.

Last year (2022), Mojácar won a country wide Ferrero Rocher competition and now every year the lights in Mojácar’s old town will become a huge attraction.

The annual Three Kings Parade in January is a highlight, bringing locals and visitors together in celebration. These local events offer a glimpse into the community spirit and traditions that make Mojacar so special.

Winter Cuisine

Mojacar’s culinary scene thrives in winter, with hearty stews and hot tapas taking center stage.

Local restaurants offer winter specials and Menu del Día’s that will warm your heart and your belly. For me, there’s nothing like a bowl of traditional ‘caldo de pescado’ (fish soup) on a chilly winter day.

In Conclusion

Winter in Mojácar is a unique experience, blending tranquility, mild weather, cultural richness, and a vibrant community spirit. It’s a chance to see a different side of Mojácar, one that’s calmer yet brimming with warmth and authenticity. As a local, I can’t recommend it enough.

The post What Is Mojacar Like In Winter?

Imagine living in a charming seaside village in Spain where the sun shines an astonishing 300 days a year.

It’s a place where history mingles with modern comforts, where the sun shines brightly for most of the year, and where the quality of life is simply unrivaled.

Welcome to Mojácar, a town steeped in history and famous for its picturesque white-washed buildings and spectacular beachfront. But is it a good place to live?

Let’s dive into the actual ins and outs of life in Mojácar.

Cost of Living and Rent in Mojácar

Compared to larger cities in Spain like Madrid or Barcelona, Mojacar is very affordable. It offers a wide range of options, from compact apartments to lavish villas with pools and amazing sea views. According to Numbeo, the cost of living in Mojacar is approximately 20% lower than in the heart of Madrid.

But what about rent? From my experience, a two-bedroom apartment near the beach will set you back around €500 a month. However, brace yourself for slight hikes during our tourist season if you’re not in a long-term let agreement.

But considering the breathtaking views and the warm Mediterranean breezes, I’d say it’s worth every cent.

The Busy Tourist Season

Like many Spanish coastal towns, Mojácar comes alive in the summer months. From June to August, the town is buzzing with tourists from around the globe. While this influx of visitors boosts the local economy and lends a vibrant atmosphere, it can make the beach fronts extremely crowded, both shopping and parking becomes a nightmare.

Moreover, the demand for workers in the hospitality sector surges, offering a lot of new temporary job opportunities if you’re bilingual. Yet, if you’re looking for a stable job outside of this industry, it can be a bit of a challenge. You might need to venture into larger cities like Almeria for more diverse job prospects. Spain’s official tourism portal has more details on the tourist season and the local economy.

Immersing in Mojácar’s Plethora of Things To Do

One of the best parts about living in Mojácar is the multitude of activities on offer, allowing you to truly immerse in the local culture and lifestyle. Even after a few years of living here, you still won’t run out of things to do.

Historical Wonders

Mojacar’s Old Town is a living testament to its rich history, offering a beautiful labyrinth of narrow, winding streets to explore. As a resident, I find myself endlessly fascinated by its 16th-century Mudejar-style church, the Iglesia de Santa María. Take a stroll through the town and you’ll be charmed by the whitewashed houses and the vibrant blossoms adding pops of color to the cobblestone streets.

Outdoor Adventures

Being a coastal town, Mojacar is a haven for water sport enthusiasts. The Mediterranean sea lends itself beautifully to activities such as sailing, boating and snorkeling. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the Sierra Cabrera mountain range offers excellent hiking trails and quad bike adventures with stunning views of the town and the sea.

Art and Culture

Mojacar is an artist’s paradise. Many painters, writers, and musicians have found inspiration in this town, and its influence is seen in the numerous galleries and music venues that dot the landscape. The Centro de Arte ‘Mirador del Castillo’ regularly hosts art exhibits, and the annual Jazz festival in summer is a must-visit.

Local Cuisine

Finally, living in Mojacar means getting to enjoy the local cuisine daily. The tapas culture here is great, with bars and restaurants offering a delicious array of options. Seafood is a local specialty, and I 100% recommend trying the ‘gambas al ajillo’ – prawns sautéed in garlic at Kontiki’s Beachfront Bar.

Mojacar is not just a place to live, but a place to truly live. With its blend of history, adventure, culture, and culinary delights, it offers a vibrant and fulfilling lifestyle that continues to captivate me every day.

I can confidently say that moving to Mojacar is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Mojácar’s Heavenly Climate

Mojacar is blessed with a Mediterranean climate, providing warm summers and mild winters. With approximately 3000 hours of sunshine each year, it’s a sun-lover’s paradise. However, be mindful of the summer heat, as temperatures can soar above 35-40°C so if you don’t like the heat, check out the best times to visit Mojácar. Luckily, the cool sea breeze provides a much-needed respite and most homes are fitted with air-conditioning.

The winters are gentle compared to the UK, with temperatures rarely dropping below 10°C. This makes it an excellent choice for those looking to escape colder climates.

With that said, once you’ve lived here for 2 years, you’ll suddenly realise how fast you’ve acclimatised and find yourself in jeans and a cost even when the weather is 15 degrees.

Embracing Mojácar’s Way of Life

As a Mojacar local I can assure you that moving here is about embracing a whole new way of life. We enjoy a slower pace, one that allows us to savor our morning café con leche without rushing, and to appreciate the beauty in everyday life.

You’ll find that Mojacar is not just a town, but a close-knit community. We celebrate our traditions, enjoy our local festivals, and stand by each other in times of need. We thrive in the tranquillity of our off-peak seasons and bask in the lively spirit of the tourist months.

If you’re looking for a peaceful, affordable place under the Spanish sun, you’ll find it hard to beat Mojácar.

The post Is Mojácar A Good Place To Live?
