What’s extremely interesting is seeing the airfield actually in use!!

Video Summary:

This unique and hidden gem boasts natural beauty and has become one of the most unusual and tranquil residential estates in the region.

Located a few kilometers inland from the bustling Costa del Sol, Almería’s Cortijo Grande offers a haven, sheltered from the pressures of overpopulation.

Despite having one of the lowest rainfall rates in the Mediterranean, the region contains oases like Cortijo Grande, where lush golf courses and verdant landscapes create a year-round temperate climate.

The estate, covering more than 2,000 acres and surrounded by 100,000 acres of land open for exploration, showcases the balance of maintaining nature while providing modern amenities. The ancient farm buildings, preserved for centuries, house modern offices, shops, restaurants, and apartments.

What sets Cortijo Grande apart from other developments is the attention to maintaining the natural environment. Nearly 200 homes are spread across the valley, yet it still appears as vast countryside.

Building is done with strict regard to maintaining the landscape and the views, ensuring a harmonious blend with the surroundings.

The proximity of Almería to cities like Granada and Alicante, along with the new air taxi service, makes this estate accessible yet isolated. Residents, many of whom make Cortijo Grande their permanent home, can indulge in various activities from horse riding to exploring caves that evidence Neolithic settlements.

The region’s rich history is ever-present, with ruins of mosques and ancient Moorish architecture interspersed with modern-day amenities. The golf course, built to international championship standards, invites both amateurs and professionals to enjoy its scenic surroundings filled with over 6,000 orange trees.

Besides golf, the estate offers other leisure activities, like clay shooting, and features like a swimming pool and supermarket. The valley also maintains a connection to its farming past, with preserved olive presses and wine-making equipment.

With building costs lower than other parts of the Spanish coast and high standards of workmanship, Cortijo Grande offers options for custom-built homes, terrace villas, and apartments. The management’s thoughtful planning ensures a blend of old and new, privacy without isolation.

Whether exploring the vibrant nearby towns or indulging in the tranquility of the area, residents have a variety of experiences at their disposal.

Even the airstrip, offering an air taxi service or flying lessons, is designed to be unobtrusive.

Nestled in the heart of Andalusia, Mojácar holds an enchanting allure that dates back millennia.

With its ancient roots and captivating beauty, Mojácar has seen a parade of civilisations come and go, each leaving their own distinctive mark on the landscape.

But have you ever paused to wonder, ‘Why is it called Mojácar‘?

Let’s delve into the tapestry of history that led to the naming we have today.

The Evolution of a Name: From Murgis-Akra to Mojácar

In its earliest days, Mojácar was known by a different name. The Greeks, one of the many cultures that once dominated this area, referred to the settlement as Murgis-Akra, a term that can be translated as “Murgis on the heights.

Over time, as different civilisations left their mark on the region, this name went through a fascinating evolution. The Latin influence transformed Murgis-Akra into Moxacar, which later morphed into Mucacra and Mosaqar under subsequent rulers.

The name Mojácar, as we know it today, is a testament to this long historical journey and the rich cultural influences that have shaped it over thousands of years.

Mojácar: A Name That Bridges Cultures

An intriguing episode from Mojácar’s history underscores the significant cultural blending that is reflected in its name.

In 1488, Moorish leaders in the region agreed to yield rule to the forces of the Catholic kings. However, the governor of Mojácar stood firm, professing that his people, though Muslims, were as Spanish as the Catholic kings themselves.

His request to be treated as brothers, not enemies, led to a unique pact permitting free association among local Moors, Christians, and Jews.

The Legacy of Mojácar’s Name

Today, the name Mojácar stands as a symbol of this town’s resilient spirit and its remarkable capacity for cultural fusion.

As we explore the narrow streets, the ancient walls, and the bustling squares, we’re reminded of the evolution of a name that has withstood the passage of time, embodying the layers of history and the different cultures that have shaped it.

Indeed, Mojácar is more than a name—it’s a chronicle of humanity’s journey, a testament to cultural harmony, and a beacon of a proud and enduring legacy.

The post Why Is It Called Mojácar?

The Indalo man symbol, a symbol deeply embedded in the heritage of Mojácar, Almería, is a potent representation of the town’s rich history and vibrant culture.

This Bronze Age symbol was discovered in the cave of “Los Letreros” in the Sierra de María-Los Vélez Natural Park in Vélez Blanco, Almería, Andalusia, Spain, dating back to 2500 BC.

The symbol depicts a figure holding an arch over its head, often interpreted as a rainbow, leading to the popular belief the Indalo was a ghost who could carry a rainbow in his hands.

The Indalo Symbol: A Good Luck Totem

Over time, the people of Almeria have come to view the Indalo symbol as a good luck charm, traditionally painted on the fronts of houses and businesses for protection against evil.

It has become so deeply rooted in Almería culture that it was adopted as the official symbol of the province.

Today, it is widely recognised in the region and beyond, featuring in many logos, crafts, and souvenirs from Almería.

The Indalo Man and Mojácar: A Symbolic Rebirth

Mojácar, once a declining town with less than 300 inhabitants in the mid-20th century, experienced a rebirth, partially attributed to the adoption of the Indalo symbol.

The ‘Movimiento Indaliano’, founded by Jesús de Perceval in the mid-1950s, chose the Indalo symbol as its emblem, symbolising the region’s cultural renaissance.

Mojácar’s rejuvenation continued into the 1960s when the local government offered free land to anyone willing to construct a dwelling.

This offer attracted international artists and counter-culturists, many of whom identified with the Indalo symbol as a representation of their new home.

As the town grew and developed, the Indalo symbol became more popular, found on businesses, consumer goods, and becoming a provincial emblem.

Experiencing the Indalo Man in Mojácar Today

The Indalo symbol has transformed from an ancient protector charm to a symbol of rejuvenation and hope. You’ll now find it on everything from t-shirts to key-chains, and pottery to jewellery, making it a unique souvenir of your visit to Mojácar.

Visiting Mojácar offers a rich variety of experiences, from sun-kissed beaches to cultural exploration, outdoor adventures, family-friendly fun, and gastronomic delights.
