A Locals Guide To Living In Mojácar

Imagine living in a charming seaside village in Spain where the sun shines an astonishing 300 days a year.

It’s a place where history mingles with modern comforts, where the sun shines brightly for most of the year, and where the quality of life is simply unrivaled.

Welcome to Mojácar, a town steeped in history and famous for its picturesque white-washed buildings and spectacular beachfront. But is it a good place to live?

Let’s dive into the actual ins and outs of life in Mojácar.

Cost of Living and Rent in Mojácar

Compared to larger cities in Spain like Madrid or Barcelona, Mojacar is very affordable. It offers a wide range of options, from compact apartments to lavish villas with pools and amazing sea views. According to Numbeo, the cost of living in Mojacar is approximately 20% lower than in the heart of Madrid.

But what about rent? From my experience, a two-bedroom apartment near the beach will set you back around €500 a month. However, brace yourself for slight hikes during our tourist season if you’re not in a long-term let agreement.

But considering the breathtaking views and the warm Mediterranean breezes, I’d say it’s worth every cent.

The Busy Tourist Season

Like many Spanish coastal towns, Mojácar comes alive in the summer months. From June to August, the town is buzzing with tourists from around the globe. While this influx of visitors boosts the local economy and lends a vibrant atmosphere, it can make the beach fronts extremely crowded, both shopping and parking becomes a nightmare.

Moreover, the demand for workers in the hospitality sector surges, offering a lot of new temporary job opportunities if you’re bilingual. Yet, if you’re looking for a stable job outside of this industry, it can be a bit of a challenge. You might need to venture into larger cities like Almeria for more diverse job prospects. Spain’s official tourism portal has more details on the tourist season and the local economy.

Immersing in Mojácar’s Plethora of Things To Do

One of the best parts about living in Mojácar is the multitude of activities on offer, allowing you to truly immerse in the local culture and lifestyle. Even after a few years of living here, you still won’t run out of things to do.

Historical Wonders

Mojacar’s Old Town is a living testament to its rich history, offering a beautiful labyrinth of narrow, winding streets to explore. As a resident, I find myself endlessly fascinated by its 16th-century Mudejar-style church, the Iglesia de Santa María. Take a stroll through the town and you’ll be charmed by the whitewashed houses and the vibrant blossoms adding pops of color to the cobblestone streets.

Outdoor Adventures

Being a coastal town, Mojacar is a haven for water sport enthusiasts. The Mediterranean sea lends itself beautifully to activities such as sailing, boating and snorkeling. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the Sierra Cabrera mountain range offers excellent hiking trails and quad bike adventures with stunning views of the town and the sea.

Art and Culture

Mojacar is an artist’s paradise. Many painters, writers, and musicians have found inspiration in this town, and its influence is seen in the numerous galleries and music venues that dot the landscape. The Centro de Arte ‘Mirador del Castillo’ regularly hosts art exhibits, and the annual Jazz festival in summer is a must-visit.

Local Cuisine

Finally, living in Mojacar means getting to enjoy the local cuisine daily. The tapas culture here is great, with bars and restaurants offering a delicious array of options. Seafood is a local specialty, and I 100% recommend trying the ‘gambas al ajillo’ – prawns sautéed in garlic at Kontiki’s Beachfront Bar.

Mojacar is not just a place to live, but a place to truly live. With its blend of history, adventure, culture, and culinary delights, it offers a vibrant and fulfilling lifestyle that continues to captivate me every day.

I can confidently say that moving to Mojacar is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Mojácar’s Heavenly Climate

Mojacar is blessed with a Mediterranean climate, providing warm summers and mild winters. With approximately 3000 hours of sunshine each year, it’s a sun-lover’s paradise. However, be mindful of the summer heat, as temperatures can soar above 35-40°C so if you don’t like the heat, check out the best times to visit Mojácar. Luckily, the cool sea breeze provides a much-needed respite and most homes are fitted with air-conditioning.

The winters are gentle compared to the UK, with temperatures rarely dropping below 10°C. This makes it an excellent choice for those looking to escape colder climates.

With that said, once you’ve lived here for 2 years, you’ll suddenly realise how fast you’ve acclimatised and find yourself in jeans and a cost even when the weather is 15 degrees.

Embracing Mojácar’s Way of Life

As a Mojacar local I can assure you that moving here is about embracing a whole new way of life. We enjoy a slower pace, one that allows us to savor our morning café con leche without rushing, and to appreciate the beauty in everyday life.

You’ll find that Mojacar is not just a town, but a close-knit community. We celebrate our traditions, enjoy our local festivals, and stand by each other in times of need. We thrive in the tranquillity of our off-peak seasons and bask in the lively spirit of the tourist months.

If you’re looking for a peaceful, affordable place under the Spanish sun, you’ll find it hard to beat Mojácar.

[33

post-897","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-local-info
["GET
